Understanding Hanging Weight vs. Finished Product Weight

When you purchase beef from Redtail Cattle Co., your order is based on the animal’s hanging weight, not the final packaged weight you receive.

Hanging Weight

Hanging weight is the weight of the animal after harvest, once the hide, head, feet, and internal organs have been removed. This is the industry standard used to determine the price of your beef.

Finished Product Weight

Finished product weight is the amount of beef you take home after the butcher trims fat, removes bone as needed, and processes the meat into your selected cuts.

What to Expect: It is normal for the finished, packaged beef to weigh less than the hanging weight. A typical take-home yield is approximately 60–65% of hanging weight. Actual yield varies based on the animal, trimming, bone-in or boneless selections, and your cut choices.

If you have questions about hanging weight or what to expect from your share, please contact Redtail Cattle Co.
